Safety Learning Activity


Purpose:
This learning activity will allow the students to explore the topic of safety in a digital way before they are required to participate in any dangerous activities. The format of this activity will allow students to start exploring and sharing thoughts and ideas regarding safety in their particular setting with other students and the teacher. This activity will incorporate 3 different Web 2.0 technologies that the instructor will have to learn and set up for their students.


VoiceThread

  1. Have the students sign up for a VoiceThread account.
  2. Make sure they customize their profile and include a profile picture.
  3. Direct the students to this VoiceThread. This Voicethread will combine photos of our machines along with comments make by each student regarding the safety aspects of each machine.
  4. The students should review the comments that have already been made prior to step 5.
  5. Have each of the student comment by using the voice or text comment feature.
  6. When all of the students have made a comments, share the VoiceThread with the entire class and discuss the comments that were made.


ToonDoo

  1. Have the students sign up for a ToonDoo account.
  2. Under Tools, choose the ToonDoo Maker.
  3. Using the ToonDoo Maker, have the student create a cartoon about safety.
  4. When they have finished, have the student email you a link to their cartoon.
  5. Place of the finished cartoons into a wiki or blog and
  6. Review and comment on each cartoon with the class.


The Newspaper Clipping Generator

  1. Discuss some of the accidents that can happen in your setting.
  2. Have the student go to The Newspaper Clipping Generator.
  3. Using the generator, have them create an article regarding a pretend accident that happened in your lab/classroom. Make sure that they include what happened and what should have happened instead. Remind them to use fake names.
  4. Have the student email you a copy of the image that is generated.
  5. Post the student generated images on a wiki or blog.
  6. Review and comment on each article with the class.
